For my learning object, I chose to include a Bitstrips comic that reflects science expectation 3.3 under the grade 8 understanding life systems strand. I thought that Bitstrips would be an excellent way to organize the information that I needed to convey to the class in order to successfully cover this expectation. I have used Bitstrips once before to discuss educational philosophies in my undergraduate career, but I have never used it with student-friendly language and wanted to try it out. Additionally, I thought it would be engaging for the students if I included the required information in this format, rather than just feeding them the knowledge through a handout or lecture. Further, I used the character "Jackie's" confusion about cell theory as a teachable moment and opportunity to answer a question that most students often have. In future lessons, I may ask students to ask any questions that they may have through an avatar character like the "Jackie" that I have created. This will allow students to anonymously ask questions without being embarrassed or discouraged about asking. It is clear based on the pictures that I have used and the questions/statements that the characters in the comic strip ask, that this comic strip covers the science expectation stated above.
I would encourage teachers to introduce this tool to students, encourage them to use in their projects and share information and expectations with students in the comic book format. I would encourage students to use this program for projects or clarification in class. I thought that the program was easy to navigate through and I found it quite simple to include text and pictures to make the comic strip visually appealing. There are many online tutorials that can help you if you are struggling as well, so look for them if you need assistance!
Well, here is my learning object, I hope you enjoy!
