Connections to the Curriculum Post: Mathematics

Hello all!

Students:

I found this great factor game online and decided to share it with you! It corresponds with what we are learning in class right now and is a fun way to review. Check it out and let me know what you think about it. We will be discussing factorization next class so make sure you understand the concepts in the game and have fun! Here is the link: http://www.hoodamath.com/games/factorfeeder.html.

Parents:

By the end of grade 8 mathematics, students are expected to have covered many overall and specific expectations. The game link that I have posted for students highlights and matches up with some of these key expectations. Primarily, this game requires students to use problem solving skills in order to guide their game player through the game board. They are also required to use their comprehension of factors and other computational strategies to complete each level. These actions fall under 2 of the 3 overall expectations in the Number Sense and Numeration strand in the curriculum documents. These expectations are as follows:

- Able to solve problems involving whole numbers, decimal numbers, fractions, and integers, using a
variety of computational strategies

- Able to solve problems by using proportional reasoning in a variety of meaningful contexts.

More specifically, the game requires participants to determine common factors and common multiples while they are playing. This is specific expectation that is also covered in the grade 8 curriculum documents:

- Determine common factors and common multiples using the prime factorization of numbers

I hope that everyone gets a chance to play or look at the game on their free time! It is a great resource to have and a fun way to practice your factoring!

I am sure that this is nothing new, but Youtube is a great resource for finding educational videos that support what we are learning in class. I know that personally, I am a visual learner and watching videos really allows me to picture the information that I am learning. Let me know what you think!!

I really like the Bitstrips  website! It allows students to express written word through a comic-book style animation. Students can create their own avatars, diction, settings and stories, while covering the Ontario language curriculum expectations. Check it out!

Pinterest is a great resource for searching the web and organizing thoughts for school projects. Simply by typing a keyword into the search bar, Pinterest generates a wide array of pictures and links that are very helpful and helps to get the creative juices flowing! Here is my Pinterest page, which allow you all to get to know me and my interests a little bit better. Feel free to check it out!
